This particular pattern (Seigaiha) is made of overlapping, fan-like waves. Because of its fan-like shape, it is said to be a pattern of ‘spreading happiness’. In addition, the endless wave pattern symbolises wishes for the prosperity of offspring and an eternity in the future. It is said to have its origins in ancient Persia and was introduced to Japan via the Silk Road.
