「蛙と兎」-Kaeru to Usagi
These images are based on Chōjū-Giga (鳥獣戯画) literally means ‘Humorous Paintings of Animals and Birds’ and is a famous series of scroll paintings from the 12th century. These works are considered the first manga because of their playful and narrative style.
The paintings, attributed to the monk Toba Sōjō, show animals such as rabbits, frogs and monkeys performing human activities such as sumo wrestling, archery and feasting. They use humour and satire to reflect the society and religion of the time.
